Overview

Louisiana State University is a public research university with its main campus in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. There are other campuses in the cities of Alexandria, Shreveport, Eunice, and New Orleans. It was founded in 1860 and is Louisiana State University System's flagship institution. The university offers more than 235 academic programs in the fields of art & design, sciences, engineering, veterinary medicine, mass communication, social work and others through its 14 colleges and schools. 

LSU, as it is commonly referred to, is noted for its extensive research facilities and is classified among "R1: Doctoral Universities - Very high research activity." It is one of the eight universities in the country with programs in law, dental, medical, and veterinary and an elite MBA program. There are currently over 35,000 students from all 50 states and over 100 countries pursuing higher education at the university.

Through the Division of Student Affairs, LSU provides help and support in matters related to campus safety, clinical services, mental health counselling, personal issues and much more. The Center for Advising and Counseling helps with the academic issues being faced by students.

Accommodation

The university offers accommodation options through traditional housing facilities, residential colleges and apartment complexes. Traditional housing is mostly available for all first-year students, while residential colleges house first-year students with similar majors. The apartments are available for rising sophomores and beyond.

The university's main campus is located in Baton Rouge, the capital of Louisiana. The city is known for its rich history and unique cultural traditions, such as the Mardi Gras celebrations, Cajun and Creole cuisine, and blues and jazz music. All the events that happen throughout the year enable students to immerse themselves in the local culture. Baton Rouge is situated on the banks of the Mississippi River and has many parks and recreational areas for boating, hiking and biking.
